man I had to read this a couple times over a couple days but, holy crap, this is a hell of a plot development now that I’ve gnawed on it a while. Now I get it. Like, a LOT of it. How much of this comes from existing myths? It’s such a neat concept. I often wonder how these different races can be coexisting in terms of understood authority…
Yes, the history of the Wild North is largely based on Irish mythology. The Fomorians were a constant threat to the previous civilizations of Ireland before the arrival of the People of the Goddess Danu (AKA Fairies) invaded the island. The two races co-ruled the island and often intermarried (Fomorians weren’t described as giants with goat heads until Christianity).
Long story short, the Half-Fairy-Half-Fomorian king shows strong favoritism to the fomorian side and oppresses the fairies, fairies revolt and get to rule the island while the fomorians get the sea. Eventually humans come to Ireland from Spain, defeat the fairies, and get to rule the “overworld” while fairies rule the “underworld”.
The Sword of Light and the Stone of Destiny are also part of Irish mythology as fairy artifacts, but in myth don’t play a big part in the Fairy-Fomorian conflict unlike in this comic
So coooooool. I need to start thinking about that stuff. I have something involving lizardmen and ancient civilizations.. there’s a weird amount of cross-cultural consistency about that kind of thing.
