Do the eight gods really reject magic? Every one of them? Even the Merchant who’s like Hermes and Odin combined? (Cf. A Brief Peace page 2…) I’d imagine him to be pretty much pro-magic.
Richard also doesn’t seem to think faith in the Eight Gods demands hatred of all things magical and fey.

But yes, you could see Magic as perhaps a vice. Thorkell is “over-correcting” here while Richard sees magic as something that humans shouldn’t tamper with, but has seen from his time with Gwyn that it is not all harmful
