Actually, now that I think about it, does this soul-stealing business mean the merrows don’t take changelings? I’d assumed Tall Green and Handsome here was a changeling and that’s why his magic wasn’t as good as the girls’, but is it just that males suck at shapeshifting?
Yes, that’s something that was just in the back of my head but, weather they’re fairies or human, girls TEND to be better with most magic than men in this universe.
Baby-stealing is more of Gwyn’s court’s business, Merrows are in the “keep the human’s soul in a cage” business, basically any business with fairies is BAD business. That whole plot came about me trying to tie together different contradicting stories about merrows, and the soul cage story was one of my favorites (though in that one, the Merrow kept the strayed souls of drowned humans caged in his house because they were cold; good intentions, but prevented them from getting into Heaven).
