Saying “You’ve got to believe me” is, ironically, an incredibly poor way to convince someone to believe you. So bad in fact that only the truly desperate would use it. Which means they’re probably telling the truth, and you should believe them, because if they weren’t they would have come up with something more believable.
And now the word “believe” is starting to sound like nonsense syllables.
